Around the world people have very different perceptions of their lives and surroundings. You do not need to travel far in order to experience that these differences create a great variety in ways of living.

In Anthropology we look into different ways of living - and different meanings, traditions and interpretations that make up the understandings of lives of people around the world. We also seek the perspective of “the other” and try to place ourselves in his/her shoes in order to gain a higher level of understanding.

We pose some of the following questions: Why do people exchange goods and which significance do we attach to exchange in our society?

Why do many people in Africa believe in witchcraft? What are the concerns of modern people in Mongolia? Why is the integration of im-

migrants and refugees so difficult? Why do Danes use the Danish flag when celebrating their birth-

days? What is culture? What is social identity? What are the social consequences of globali-

sation? What happens to us when we encounter ways of living that differ from our own?

We will also make an attempt at using the ethnographic method of participant observation in practice and make a small field study of social interaction and meanings.

The subject will be taught in English.
