Music
The travel destinations are among the popular centres of music history: New York, Memphis and Nashville in the USA.
In the autumn term the study tour goes to New York where we will be focusing on jazz and musicals. We will chase musical experiences and places with a historic significance for almost every music genre. During our stay we will visit the famous tourist attractions as for instance Times Square, Empire State Building, Guggenheim, Central Park and the Statue of Liberty.
In the spring term we will go to Memphis and Nashville where we will be exploring country music and blues. An important part of the tour will be the drive from Memphis to Nashville. We will go along the Mississippi to the very small town: Clarksdale. A number of blues musicians come from this place, for instance B.B. King, Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker and Ike Turner.
Nature and Outdoor Life
In the autumn term the study tour goes to the Southern of Norway, where we row sea kayak both in the skerries and in the open sea. Moreover, we will go trekking high up in the fells.
In the spring term we will go to the winter fells and snow caves in Norway. We will stay the night in snow caves and winter lavvos and explore the white world skiiing.
Politics
In the autumn term we will go to New York and Washington DC. We will be visiting American politicians, public servants and of course, the American population. The tour will lead us to The White House, The Statue of Liberty and Ground Zero. In this way we will be travelling to the “new” USA with president Obama at the head. We will try to understand the role of the financial crisis for Americans and also try to find out the ordinary American’s opinion on the USA and the world.
In the spring term the tour goes to China: Beijing, Nanjing and Hongkong. In Beijing we will be meeting young Chinese students, go walking on the The Chinese Wall, see the Tiananmen Square and many other places. In Nanjing we will be visiting one of China’s largest NGO organisations which works closely with the poorest part of the “forgotten China”. In Hongkong we will experience an international metropolis and look into China’s role in the international economy.
Art Studio
We will be right in the centre of the flourishing art scene in Kenya. We will experience this art scene and the exciting Kenyan artists. Moreover, these artists will be our teachers in Nairobi, and we will go visit them in their primitive homes and at their studios out in the country. We will also do art work together with street children in the slum of Kibera. It goes without saying that we will go on a safari in the beautiful national parks of Kenya.
EuroClass
Each semester contains a two-week travel period with research projects and visits to institutions and organisations around Europe. The spring semester also offers the opportunity of a 30-day voluntary stay in an organisation in another European country as an extension of the semester.
